Sporting Success at RAF Cranwell

12 Dec 2017

The Air Training Corps’ (ATC’s) Senior Rugby and Netball competitions recently reached their conclusion for 2017 at RAFC Cranwell.

A cold but occasionally sunny day greeted teams from all six of the ATC’s regions for a day of sometimes very closely fought matches.

The rugby was won by Central and East Region (C&E) after a very competitive final with London & South East Region.  C&E’s team captain was 16 year old Cadet Corporal Jay Shipway from 1239 (Broxbourne & Hoddesdon) Squadron.

Jay said: “We did not concede a single try.  The team was a bit disconnected at first but soon came together into a good unit”.

The region’s sports officer, Squadron Leader Stephen Riggs RAFAC added that “the cadets put in a strong performance that was reflected in the results”.

On the Netball court the competition was also closely fought and very little separated the top teams.

Ultimate winner was London & South East Region with South West Region in second place.

Their team captain was Cadet Warrant Officer Jessica El-Homssi from 14F (Northolt) Squadron.  At 19 years of age this was her last National level event before she ages-out next year so was very pleased with the result.

Jessica said “I was very impressed by the team’s performance.  We had two very tight games but the team pulled-together and all came good in the end.”  The region’s team manager was Flight Lieutenant Jo Blackwell RAFAC who said: “I am particularly pleased with the result.  The cadets worked really hard and all stepped-up to the plate when necessary.  We had one nail biting game but the cadets’ flexibility was good and they were able to change positions when necessary".

Alex Maddison, who is the ATC’s National Sport Officer at HQ Air Cadets, said: “it has been a good day of competition with some real skill on show.  A great way to finish off 2017’s competitions”.

The best performing cadets on the day were selected to represent the ATC in representative matches to played early in 2018.
